Arenas Negra is a private, two-story oceanfront home on Puerto Rico's north coast in Barceloneta. The beach
The beach below the house is part of a real north-coast shoreline. Some days it is mellow, some days it is more active. For calmer swimming, Playa Palmas Altas is a protected cove about 5 minutes away.
The sand
The sand runs dark brown to charcoal depending on the light. It is not fake-marketing black, but it is unmistakably different from the usual beach experience.
Getting around
Rent a car. PR-22 is about 8 minutes away and connects you to San Juan in roughly 45 minutes. The coastal road PR-681 has restaurants, bars, and good views the entire way.
A living shoreline
Some mornings, the beach leaves evidence.
During a recent stay, Ramon walked down to the sand and found fresh sea turtle tracks right below the house. That is part of what makes this coastline different: the black sand, the reef, the waves, and the wildlife are not scenery. They are alive.
